Boutiqaat

Founded in 2015, the pioneering Kuwaiti retailer has completely revolutionized the retail landscape in the Gulf, evolving beyond a traditional e-commerce platform into an ecosystem that connects brands, influencers, and consumers across multiple touchpoints. Boutiqaat meets consumers where they are as they seamlessly move between online and offline, transforming how they discover, engage with, and shop for beauty products.

Boutiqaat sits at the intersection of influence, technology, and retail, evolving over the years into one of the Middle East's leading destinations for beauty, fragrance, fashion, and lifestyle. Its success is driven by the ability to establish strategic partnerships with globally recognized brands across Europe, North America, and Asia, while consistently introducing new concepts and experiences that enrich the regional retail landscape.

The company's growth journey has been supported by strong investor confidence and strategic partnerships. Over the years, Boutiqaat has achieved significant valuation milestones, including approximately $230 million in its first investment round, followed by around $500 million in a subsequent funding round. These milestones reflect the strength of Boutiqaat's business model, its ability to scale across the region, and its continued evolution from a digital-first platform into a broader beauty and lifestyle ecosystem.

BeautyMatter caught up with Mohammad Alshammari, International Business Development Manager at Boutiqaat, who shared  his views on beauty in the region.

Can you share insights into the current state of online vs. offline beauty retail in the GCC?

At Boutiqaat, we believe the future lies in connecting both journeys rather than treating them separately. Consumers today may discover a product online, engage with it through content and recommendations, and then seek a physical experience before making a purchase or becoming a repeat customer.

One of the unique aspects of Boutiqaat’s journey is that, unlike many traditional retailers that expanded from physical stores into e-commerce, we followed the opposite path. We built a strong digital foundation first, allowing us to develop years of customer insights, shopping behavior data, and trend understanding before expanding into physical retail concepts. This approach has already been demonstrated through concepts such as Korea Town, where digital demand and customer insights helped shape a specialized retail experience focused on one of the fastest-growing beauty categories in the region.

What differentiates your platform from competitors in the region?

We combine customer understanding, influencer-led discovery, and a business model built around how consumers actually discover and shop for beauty products today.

Through millions of customer interactions, we have developed deep insights into shopping behavior, product preferences, and trends. These insights help us identify opportunities, build relevant assortments, and introduce brands and products that resonate with consumers across the region.

Our influencer-led model has also played a key role in transforming product discovery into trusted recommendations and customer engagement. Over time, this has enabled us to build a diverse portfolio of international, regional, exclusive, and private label brands.

What insights can you share about what makes consumers in the Gulf region tick?

It's well known that GCC consumers are some of the most engaged and trend-aware beauty consumers in the world. They are highly connected, quick to discover new brands and beauty trends, and even start trends that go global.

At the same time, consumers are becoming increasingly informed and selective. While influencer recommendations remain important, purchasing decisions are ultimately driven by product performance, authenticity, and relevance to their needs.

We also see a growing demand for exclusivity and differentiation. Consumers are increasingly drawn to products, brands, and experiences that feel unique, whether through exclusive launches, limited editions, emerging beauty brands, or private label offerings.

Who is the Boutiqaat consumer?

The Boutiqaat consumer is driven by discovery.  They are highly engaged, connected, and passionate about beauty discovery. For them, beauty is no longer simply about purchasing products. Beyond convenience, it is about exploring trends, finding new brands, and engaging with experiences that feel personal and relevant.

Is there a myth you’d like to bust for businesses contemplating expansion in the region?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the GCC can be treated as a single market. While there are many similarities across the region, customer preferences, shopping behavior, and beauty trends can vary significantly from one country to another.

Another misconception is that consumers in the GCC simply follow global beauty trends. In reality, they are highly engaged, well-informed, and quick to adopt new trends, while still expecting brands to understand local preferences and needs.

We also believe that success in the region is not achieved through distribution alone. Having the right products available is important, but today's consumers are also looking for relevance, discovery, engagement, and experiences.

Brands that invest in understanding their customers and building meaningful connections with them are more likely to succeed and grow in the long term.
